Bringing Recovery to Veterans and Dogs
Here at HRT K9, we're dedicated to providing shelter and rescue dogs with a new lease on life. Our mission goes beyond merely finding them new homes; it extends to transforming them into loyal service companions. Through our intensive training program, we empower these dogs to realize their full potential.
By pairing these dogs with veterans in need, we initiate a life-altering journey that not only impacts the veterans but also gives these dogs a profound sense of purpose. Our goal is to create a positive and lasting effect on the lives of both the rescued animals and the individuals who have selflessly served our country.
At HRT K9, we stand behind the belief of second chances for both our veterans and our four-legged friends. We invite you to join us in our quest to bring hope and meaning to those who have sacrificed so much for our nation.
How Do We Choose?
If you’re anything like us, when you see a dog, you want to take it home. . If we had our way, we’d take them all. Unfortunately, not every dog has the right temperament to be a service dog.
We look for dogs who are happy and confident: they love people and interacting with them and are confident and comfortable in new environments and with unfamiliar sounds. We also look for dogs who are intelligent and highly motivated.
How We Train
At HRT K9, we believe in laying a strong foundation for our service dogs by starting with basic obedience training and socialization. This crucial step allows the dogs to develop the necessary skills and behavior to become reliable companions for veterans in need. Once our dogs have mastered these fundamental principles, we carefully match each one with a veteran based on their specific needs and lifestyle. This personalized approach enables us to tailor the training and specific tasks to meet the individual requirements of each veteran, ensuring that the service dog becomes a valuable and essential support in the veteran's life.
We believe that dogs, like children, are unique. There is no one-size-fits-all training method that will be effective for every dog. At HRT K9 we use a combination of positive reinforcement and corrective measures.
